The Suunto MC-2 is a professional mirror compass for precise navigation and direction measurements. It features a particularly stable and fast needle, as well as a liquid-filled capsule for stable operation. The mirror supports you in direction finding and signaling, while the sighting hole and front sight allow for precise direction determination.
For map work, the compass is equipped with a base plate and magnifying glass, as well as metric UTM scales and inch rulers. The adjustable declination correction allows you to adapt to local conditions. Luminous markings support you when working in poor light. The compass also features a clinometer and a lanyard with a quick-release fastener for fixing to the wrist, which can be easily removed for working with the map.

The basic principle in 3 steps
Aim at the target: The compass cover is opened at an angle of approximately 60° to 70°. A target object (e.g., a mountain peak) at eye level is sighted directly through the sighting notch on the upper edge of the mirror.
Observe the needle: Through the mirror effect, you can simultaneously see the compass housing and the magnetic needle in the reflection, without losing sight of the target.
Read the course: The compass housing is rotated until the north marking aligns with the magnetic needle. The exact bearing angle can then be precisely read from the scale.
Advantages over a standard compass
More precise aiming: By simultaneously seeing the target object and the compass housing, the inaccurate looking back and forth is eliminated.
Additional protection: The closed cover protects the compass housing from scratches and bumps during transport.
Signal and emergency function: The mirror can be used as a signal mirror (emergency signal) in an emergency.
The declination correction compensates for the deviation between the magnetic North Pole (where the needle aligns) and the geographic North Pole (which is shown on the map).
How the correction works with a mirror compass
Mechanical adjustment: A small screw on the bottom of the compass housing allows you to rotate the north indicator by the local declination angle (e.g., 3° East).
Map reading without conversion: Once adjusted, the compass bearings directly match the grid systems of topographic maps - tedious calculations in the field are completely eliminated.
